Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a term used to describe a group of disorders, linked by abnormalities of the meibomian glands.
MGD can cause an altered tear film , ocular surface disease, ocular and eyelid discomfort, and evaporative dry eye. Prolonged and advancing MGD can cause atrophy to the glands. When meibomian glands are treated in the early stages, it is possible to restore their function , even before atrophy sets in.
